Knights can’t capitalize on low-scoring Columbia Valley crew
It was supposed to be a Halloween treat for the North Okanagan Knights as the 1-19 Columbia Valley Rockies dropped by the Nor-Val Sports Centre Saturday night.
Instead, it was a nightmare as Briar McNaney’s fifth goal of the season, at 1:23 of overtime, gave the Rockies a 4-3 Kootenay International Hockey League victory.
The Rockies, who had been blown away 9-0 by the Chase Chiefs the night before, tied the game at 3-3 when Sean Menton scored his team-high sixth of the year at 7:05 of the third period.
Darrell Boldon, shorthanded, and Zack MacLellan, with his first of the year, also scored for Columbia Valley.
Kurtis Hagen (3rd), Kevin Swales (2nd) and Colin Minard (7th) replied for the Knights, who fell to 2-14-02. Brodie Clark earned two assists for the Knights, who lost leading scorer Trevor Fitzgerald in the first period for a check-from-behind.
“It was a bad goal,” said Knights’ head coach Eddie Johnstone, of the overtime tally. “We had it behind our net and we were trying to bring it out and we gave it to them.
“I thought by far we were the better team, but it’s that damn learning process, again.”
The Knights outshot the Rockies 43-36 with North Okanagan goalie Chris Solecki taking third star behind Rockie goalie Jeff Magee and McNaney.
Viper prospect Brenden Persley scored twice, including once in overtime, and set up another as the host Penticton Lakers clipped the Revelstoke Grizzlies 4-3 Sunday afternoon.
Riley Spraggs of Vernon scored once for the Grizzlies (15-1-1-1), who visit the Knights Saturday night at the Nor-Val Sports Centre. The Knights entertain the Creston Valley Thunder Cats (8-6-0-1) Friday night in Enderby.
