Flyers upend ‘Nucks
Short a few clutch players, the Teale Utility Canucks were somewhat vulnerable Wednesday night at Wesbild Centre.
The Westwood Cabinet Flyers showed no mercy, grounding the previously unbeaten Canucks 5-3 in Interior Hockey League action.
Matt Glinsbockel scored twice for the Flyers (6-1-0-1), while Corey Massie, Rich Hoglund and Kris Glinsbockel added singles. Rick Galvagno earned a pair of assists.
Marcus Wiebe, with two goals, and Chris Swales replied for the 8-1 Canucks, who were without top goal scorer Ryan Austring and the Killingbeck brothers (Rob and Troy).
Byron Tiggelaar made 23 saves for the win, while Steven Clarke recorded 36 stops.
In the early nighter at Wesbild, Ben Cave supplied 2+1 as the Sutton Acadians toppled the Aquatico Bay Bar & Grill Sharks 6-3.
Curtis Wakelin, Gord French and Bobby Nicholls also scored for the Acadians (3-4), while Kory Keehn (2) and Cory Varga replied for the 0-8 Sharks.
Rhett Ballard pulled the hat trick as the Silver Star Hitmen grounded the R.E. Postill & Sons Orphans 7-5 Tuesday night at Civic Arena.
Kyle Pliszka (2), Kurtis Jacques (1+2) and Troy Connelly also scored for the Hitmen, who got four assists from Jeff Scott.
Justin Nerling, Mike McMorran, Chris Bradford, Jeremy Silzer and Ryan Kurbis replied for the Orphans. Jamie Johannson had three helpers.
Deryck Irmen pocketed 6+3 as the Kal Tire Knights iced the M&K Ready-Mix Bruins 11-6 at the Nor-Val Sports Centre in Armstrong.
Steve Richter with 2+4, Justin Glinsbockel with 2+2 and Curtis Summerfelt with 1+4, helped the Knights (8-2).
Jarret Watts, Mike Tew, Dean Francks and Duane Dennis each earned 1+2, while Justin Baillargeon and Tyler Galenzoski also scored for the Bruins (5-3-0-2).
In women’s hockey, the Vernon Buy-Low Foods Vixens brushed back the Salmon Arm Wildfire 5-4 in hard-fought, penalty-free game
The line of Derri-Ann Cooper, Bernie Dwan, and Allana Lidstone jumpstarted the Vixens’ offence with Cooper scoring off a great pass from d-man Christine Bosworth.
Lidstone then made a perfect chip pass out of the defensive zone, and Cooper rushed the length of the ice, deking the goalie and sliding it under her pads. Cooper finished the natural hat trick (with her dad visiting from Edmonton cheering her on) in the first period, popping in a rebound after a shot from Lidstone to tie it up 3-3.
With four minutes left in the second period, Dwan, Cooper and Lidstone executed a tic-tac-toe play with Lidstone burying Cooper’s pass at the goal crease to take the lead. Dwan, from Cooper, completed the offence in the third.
