Renegades draw Blazers

The Royal LePage Renegades opened the Okanagan Mainline Bantam Tier 1 Hockey League season Saturday with a comeback 3-3 tie against the Kamloops Blazers.
The Renegades needed two periods to find their game, and by that time Kamloops had jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Midway through the third period, Logan Mick put the Renegades on the scoreboard. Austin Garrington got the assist.
Four minutes later, Harlan Orr scored from Jordan Burns and Conor Payne to draw the Renegades within one. With just over a minute to play, Alex Gillies struck to tie the game, from Payne and Orr.
Coach Ryan Parent said the team’s effort in the second half of the game was good, and he pointed to the solid play of the rookie line of Mick, Logan Geefs and Spencer Hewson.
The Vernon Machine Vipers bowed 10-3 to the Westside Warriors in Bantam Tier 2 action Sunday.
Vernon’s Jaydon Agar opened the scoring 64 seconds into the first period, assisted by Sean Connors. It was 2-1 Westside after one period.
Vernon got goals in the second from Connors and Brett Jewell with assists going to Cam Strike, Jacob Dolinar and Matt Halvorson.
The Breakaway Fitness Vipers stuffed Campbell River 6-0 in exhibition Midget Tier 1 action Saturday night in Penticton.
Clayton Ricketts pulled the hat trick, while Jedd Soleway had 2+1 and Devon Hascarl scored once. Mack Leroux chipped in with two assists.
Jordan Vallance was solid in net turning away all challenges, including a glove save from a seated position during a mad scramble with 40 seconds remaining in the third period.
The Coca-Cola Vipers lost 6-0 to Westside and tied Salmon Arm 1-1 in a pair of road Midget Tier 2 league games to start the regular season.
Danny Todosychuk stood tall facing 55 shots against the former tier 1 Warriors at Royal LePage Place Sunday afternoon.
Michael Hails turned aside 32 shots and Trevor Pickett pocketed the equalizer with nine minutes left in the third to give the Vipers a tie at Hucul Pond in Salmon Arm Saturday afternoon.
Jaden Crozier assisted on the high-flying Pickett’s marker, making a nice move on the Salmon Arm goaltender.
The Sun Valley Sabres opened the Pee Wee Tier 3 season with a 6-6 tie in Merritt.
Big Vernon d-man Jene Desjarlais played a strong, physical game and scored a spectacular goal on an end-to-end rush. Forward Easton Jones netted two goals with singles coming from Colton Skead, Ryan Harder and Josh Decoffe, on a tip-in from Logan Imrich’s point shot. Alex Richardson had two helpers with Jordyn Pimm, Seth Blundell and Layk Petersen each getting one assist. Billy Cawthorn was solid in net.
Skead bagged two goals as the Sabres slammed Salmon Arm 8-2 in their home opener Sunday.
Austin Derkach, Seth Blundell, Desjarlais, Decoffe, Harder and Richardson each supplied singles in front of Jacob Holland, who turned away 25 shots.
The Vernon Veterinary Clinic Knights lost 5-3 to Westside in Tier 3 Pee Wee league play in Enderby. Thomas Pulmer, Ian Bulmer and Lee Springer handled the Knights’ offence.
The Lumby Stars started the Tier 4 season by crushing Clearwater 11-1 and storming the Kamloops Outlaws 7-3 in home games.
Against Clearwater, Jagger Williamson (3+2) and Logan Meier each had hat tricks, while Keenan MacDonald (2+2), Zach Kuperus, Tyler Yule, and Nicholas Stanhope completed the offence. Shale Williamson had two helpers.
On Sunday, Jagger Williamson tossed some timely hits on defence and scored three goals, while MacDonald (2+1), Kuperus and Stanhope rounded out the Lumby scoring. Cody Bauml pocketed three assists, while goalie Jame Desilets had one.
Wolfpack prowl weekend wins
The Senior Atom H&L Glass Vernon Wolfpack started the regular season with a pair of wins, stopping Kelowna #3 6-3 and icing Kamloops #3 5-1.
Captain Connor Marritt scored twice in the first period versus Kelowna, who equalized shortly after. A hard Ethan King point shot gave the Wolfpack the lead once again. Kelowna tied it again, but Mika Burns scored the winner just 10 seconds later.
Levi Danbrook added a shorthanded goal for the Pack in the third, and Jason Shaigec walked through Kelowna’s defence for an unassisted goal to conclude the scoring.
The Wolfpack got stellar goaltending from Conor Webb and some great penalty killing in the firest period to beat Kamloops.
Marritt (2), Danbrook (2) and Matthew Kowalski handled the H&L Glass offence. Kamloops scored with 90 seconds left.
In other Senior Atom Rep league action, the Valley Wood Venom lost 5-0 to the Kelowna Eagles and fell 9-5 to the Salmon Arm Silvertips.
Kieran Watts and Ethan Huizinga faced 40 shots combined versus the Tips. Kyle Sherwood scored twice and assisted on C.J. Storey’s goal. Connor Johnston set up Joshua Bridge, while Joe Eggert also tallied for the Venom.
The North Okanagan Knights started Senior Atom league play by grounding the Clearwater Hawks 7-3 and 12-2.
Matthew Dolinar and Brady Marzocco led the Knights with 2+2 in Game 1, while other goals were scored by Niklas Luttmerding, Jenna Fletcher and Steven Benischek.
On Sunday, Marzocco produced 2+3, while Dolinar earned 2+3, Benischek had 2+2, Luttmerding and Ethan Maarhuis each had 2+1 and Jaxon Cummings one goal. Samantha Head chipped in with three assists while Dawson Boyce added two.
