Stars shining

The Lumby Midget Stars stopped visiting Salmon Arm 9-5 in exhibition Midget Super League action Sunday at Pat Duke Memorial Arena.
Mitchell Wilson put the Stars on the board going five hole, and then rookie Jordan Somerset tied the game 2-2 on a breakaway. Salmon Arm again took the lead in the second, only to have Denan Bosk (1+2) come up with the equalizer, off an assist by Justin Burk.
Towering d-man Matt Kolb (2+2) put the Stars ahead and Jamie Sawchuk added a single to put Lumby up 5-4 going into the third period.
Lumby pulled ahead for good in the final frame as Thomas Corkill started things rolling on assists from Rodney Thompson (2A) and Theo Wagner.
Goalie Kohen Baranyi stopped a Salmon Arm shooter on a penalty shot to take away any momentum the visitors might have gained.
Baranyi split the goaltending duties with rookie Mike Britch. Coach Murray Wilson cited Chris Castellarin and Graham Williams for their strong defensive play, along with the Edwards brothers, Robbie and Ashton.
In Pee Wee Tier 4 Rep action, the Stars continued their fine preseason exhibition play by defeating Kamloops 6-2 on Saturday, then tying Kelowna 3-3 at home on Sunday afternoon.
Nicholas Stanhope’s hat trick led the way for Lumby, while Jagger Williamson added two, and Keenan MacDonald picked up a single.
On Sunday, Williamson potted a pair and MacDonald finished the scoring for the Stars. Jake Desilets was stellar in net.
In B.C. Major Midget Hockey League action, the Okanagan Rockets split with the North Island Silvertips in Nanaimo, but remain in first place.
The 6-1-1 Rockets lost 3-0 Saturday with goalie Conor Barrie (Vernon) and the penalty killers enjoying solid showings.
Brett Mulcahy, Tanner Burns (Vernon), Max Mowat (Vernon) and Justin Hickman scored Sunday as the Rockets edged the Silvertips 4-3. Zac McPhee of Vernon, recently assigned by the WHL’s Tri-City Americans, had assists on all four goals.
The Silvertips are 3-3.
Darren Hogg played well in the Rockets’ net. The Rockets have a bye this weekend and host the North Thompson Blazers Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Kelowna Capital News Centre.
