Ursel rules coast spiel
Brad Wood throws for Ty Griffith (Nufloors) as Darin Gerow (left) and Darren Nelson sweep during Capri Insurance Super League Curling Wednesday night at the curling club.
A tidy $20,000 for half a game’s work – not a bad payday for Kelowna’s Bob Ursel at the Westcoast Curling Classic in New Westminster.
Ursel – backed by Vernon’s Jim Cotter (skip’s stones), and a front end of Kevin Folk and Rick Sawatsky – iced New Westminster’s Sean Geall 7-1 in Monday’s final. They forced handshakes after just four ends.
After recording a deuce in one and allowing a single in two, Ursel scored two in three and stole three in four to build a commanding lead.
A total of 32 teams competed for the $80,000 purse. Geall earned $12,500, followed by Alberta’s Kevin Martin ($8,750) and Ontario’s Glenn Howard ($8,750) in third and fourth respectively.
Meanwhile, in Capri Insurance Super League play Wednesday night at the Vernon Curling Club, Cotter (Brown’s Stone & Garden) remained undefeated at 3-0 by doubling Sherry Heath (Inspiration Homes) 8-4.
Cotter, who turned 35 Thursday, took a three-point lead when Heath’s final rock came up short in the first end. Heath (2-1) clawed back with singles in two and three, but Cotter replied with a double in four.
Heath countered again with singles in five and six, but got caught gambling in seven, allowing Cotter to count three.
Jenn Gerow (A&W) counted singles in ends three, four and five to upend Blake Kimura (Village Green Hotel) 5-2, earning their first win of season. They plan on rewarding coach Brent Giles with a root beer float. Gerow and Kimura are both 1-2.
Ty Griffith (Nufloors) took full advantage of a lucky break in the second end, scoring three points en route to a 9-5 win over Ron McDougall.
Griffith (3-0) ended any chance of a comeback with a great draw through a tight hole to steal two more in the fourth end.
McDougall (1-2), who earlier counted singles in one and three, swapped deuces with Griffith in five and six.
An unfortunate pick on Kayla Gunner’s (Armstrong Inn) last rock in the first end resulted in a steal of five for T.J. Perepolkin (Royal York/Branding Iron Pub), who went on to win 8-0.
Perepolkin improved to 2-1, while Gunner is 0-3.
Veterans Wayne Laface (Line-X) and Dave Merklinger got some help from their youthful front end of Andrew Mercer and Darren Heath as they hammered Jon Gardner (Sladen Moore) 8-0 for their first win. Both rinks are sitting at 1-2.
