The second-place Newport Thunder take on the fifth-place Jayhoo’s Raiders as the Vernon Major Men’s Fastball League playoffs open Monday night at Alexis Park Stadium.

The Thunder closed out the regular season with a 12-8 win over the Rosman Spartans (7-8) Wednesday night at Komasket Park to seal second spot at 8-7 behind the Merchants (13-3).

John Blazek went 3-for 4 with three runs Wednesday night as Sutton Realtors doubled the Raiders 14-7 at Alexis Stadium.

Bert Ducharme took the win, while Dan Wilson suffered the loss. Andy Leighton went 2-for-4 with two runs to help the Realtors, while Wilson supplied three hits and two runs for the Raiders.

In Tuesday night playoff action, the Spartans go up against the fourth-place Sutton, who fell 7-1 to the Merchants Thursday night after scoring eight second-inning runs to stop the Thunder 18-6 Tuesday night.

Tim Henderson took the win Thursday as the Merchants beat Sutton. Jeff Eustache took the loss.

Ducharme also earned the win as Sutton grounded the Thunder. JY Bonneau took the loss.

Daigan Ducharme went 4-for-4 with a solo dinger, while Chad Comer also went 4-for-4 for Sutton. Justin Joe was 2-for-3 and Mario Richard was 1-for-2 with two runs for the Thunder.

The Raiders (4-11) almost pulled off the upset of the year Monday night, taking a 12-10 lead into the seventh before the Merchants rallied for a 14-12 victory.

Ryan Schnieder was 2-for-2 with a two-run home run as the Merchants held off the Raiders. Byron Zies was 1-for-2 with a solo dinger in support of Mike Funk. Frank Lewis took the loss. Chris Bonneau went 2-for-2 for the Raiders

Meanwhile, the Vernon Mixed Orthodox League is scheduled to start Tuesday, July 28 and run through mid-September.

Games will be played on week nights at Alexis Stadium. Teams and or players wishing to play are urged to call Dennis at 250-306-0378.
