With a final-round 7-under par 64, Riley Wheeldon’s record-tying 264 total blew away the field by eight strokes, earning him the B.C. Junior Boys Golf Championship Friday afternoon at Pitt Meadows Golf Club.

The Comox native maintained the lead throughout the tournament, and carried a two-stroke margin over Justin Shin of Maple Ridge into the final round.

“I really came into today’s round focused,” said Wheeldon. “I knew with the right shots that the numbers were out there. I wanted to start playing like I know I can.”

Wheeldon’s bogey-free round began with a run of five birdies on the front nine to take him to 15 under. He birdied three more holes on the back, and only made three bogeys and one double during the entire tournament.

“I was putting great today,” said Wheeldon. “Putting can be my Achilles heel but I tried to stay calm and let the birdies come to me.”

Defending champion Eugene Wong of North Vancouver stormed up the leaderboard with seven birdies to finish second at 10-under 278.

Shin carded a final 8-under 280 for third, followed by Bryan Lichimo of North Vancouver in fourth at 4-under 284.

Vernon’s Justin Wurz was the top local finisher with a final-round par 72 to sit in a four-way tie for 19th at 298.

Spallumcheen Golf Club’s Conner Kozak recorded 73-79-77-74 (303) to finish tied for 32nd, Coldstream’s Bryce Dahlen shot 77-78-77-74 (306) to earn a share of 39th, and Spall’s Dallas Pepper finished in 68th at 77-79-86-80 (322).

Wheeldon, Shin, Lichimo and Nicholas Russell of Vancouver will comprise the B.C. Junior boys team at the Canadian Junior Boys Inter-provincial Championship at Westmount Golf & Country Club in Kitchener, Aug. 2-6.
