He warmed up alongside the likes of Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte and Matt Grevers – all medalist at the Olympic Games in Beijing.

The Vernon Kokanee Swim Club’s Anders McIntyre swam against the world’s best at the 42nd annual Santa Clara International Swim Meet in California.

McIntyre, 16, swam the 200 butterfly finals against Phelps, and although he finished sixth, McIntyre improved his time by two seconds to a respectable two minutes and two seconds.

The Kokanee ranked 30th among 60 teams at the meet. There were more than 500 swimmers from at least seven different countries representing more than 100 clubs.

Next up for McIntyre are the world trials at the outdoor pool in Montreal, July 8-11.

Meanwhile, 10 Kokanees recently competed at the B.C. AA Championship Meet in Surrey.

The contingent achieved best times well beyond 85 per cent, which is remarkable for a championship meet, says head coach Marc Tremblay.

All 10 swimmers advanced to the finals – Bryan Carruthers, Paul Czerwonka, Allison Hughes, Courtney Lee, Emma Levorson, Christopher Loland, Isaiah Peters, Joshua Phillips, Jamie Sullivan and Florian Terpstra.

Lee, Loland and Levorson made their AAA qualifying standard for the B.C. AAA Championships in Saanich, which started Friday.
