Lewis locks up Rosman

Veteran Vince Lewis pitched a gem, giving up only five hits as the Newport Beach Thunder grounded the Rosman RV Spartans 12-4 in Vernon Major Men’s Fastball League action at Alexis Park Stadium.
Brandon Budan smacked a solo home run for the 6-6 Spartans. Losing pitcher John Spencer was hit hard, giving up six dingers. The Thunder went to 7-6.
In Tuesday night action at Alexis, the Merchants outslugged the Jayhoo’s Raiders 14-11.
The Raiders bats were still hot after a Monday night win over the Spartans, scoring 11 runs off Merchants’ starter Jim Kelly.
Merchants’ slugger Mike Funk crushed a tape-measure home run deep into the horseshoe club, off Raiders’ pitcher Dan Wilson, bringing home Ruben Schneider and Nigel Hymas in the top of the seventh inning.
The 10-2 Merchants’ defence then shut down the upstart Raiders (3-8) to hold on for the win.
The Raiders made it tough on the Spartans in a 3-2 victory Monday night.
Robby Epp, in relief of Dan Wilson, shut down the high-powered Spartan offence, giving the Raiders’ offence time to tie up the game in the seventh.
With Toby Lachuck on second base, Brandon Ellis singled up the middle giving the Spartans the walk-off win.
The Merchants face the Raiders Monday night, while Sutton Realty tangles with the Thunder Tuesday. The playoffs start Monday, July 13.
