Pezzin shoots low for Goose glory
Published: September 23, 2008 7:00 PMMarc Pezzin of Canoe Creek carded rounds of 68-73 for a 141 total, claiming the Canada Goose Open by one stroke over Salmon Arm’s Jeremy Osborne at the Spallumcheen Golf & Country Club.
Oley Kasper of Predator Ridge took the overall low net title at 131. There was a field of 138 last weekend. Both Pezzin, a part-owner of the new Salmon Arm track, and Kasper pocketed 37-inch Toshiba LCD TVs.
Osborne shot 72-70 to win the first flight, while Hugh McNeil of Kelowna (149), Clarence Calyniuk of Prince George at 162 and John Sissons of Kelowna Shadow Ridge at 160 also topped their flights to win Titleist putters.
Runners-up in low gross (winning golf bags) were Wayne Tresierra of Semlin Valley at 145, Rick Spiller of Spallumcheen at 153, Kim Ward of Kamloops Rivershore at 163 and Wally Okrainec of Spall at 165.
Third low gross finishers (winning wedges) were Peter Howe of Kokanee Springs at 146, Claude Bertoli of Prince George at 154, Ivan Legrandeur of Spall at 165 and Dave Ingram of Spall at 173.
Fourth low gross finishers included Brock Waldron of Kelowna at 148, Gerald Illner of Salmon Arm at 156, Norm Metcalf of Spall at 166 and Mike Martin of Prince George at 173.
Low net runners-up (taking home 19-inch TVs) were Dale Gruber of The Dunes in Kamloops at 135 in the first flight, followed by Spall members Reid Church at 136, Phil Duckett at 138 and Gord Rowland at 135.
Second low net winners (golf bags) included Robert Smith of Spall at 139, Frank Deiter of Vernon at 138, Trevor Buksa of Spall at 141 and Richard Sanbad of Prince George at 137.
Luke Grant of Spall was third low net at 142 in the second flight for a free putter, while Spall’s Pat Morgan (140), Bob Wagner (142) and Reg Morin (142) took fourth in flights one through three for a new pair of shoes.
Gord Link of Predator was fourth low net at 139 in the fourth flight for shoes.
Spall golfers Gary Swanson, John Lysholm, Tim Bouthot and Doug Patton earned KPs Saturday, while Kyle Wiebe of Spall won a pair of KPs Sunday.
Meanwhile, Spallumcheen’s Myles Johnson is one of 130 players at the 2008 Titleist & FootJoy Canadian PGA Assistants’ Championship presented by Simmlands Insurance
Play began Tuesday at the prestigious Club de Golf Beloeil in Beloeil, Que., near Montreal. There is a purse of $60,000 with the winner earning $9,000.
This year is guaranteed to be one of the best showcases of talent when past champions Phil Jonas of Vancouver (2006, 2004) and Bryn Parry of Vancouver (2005, 1999) battle once again for the prestigious national championship against some of the top assistant professionals in the country.
After a delay of an hour and a half due to frost, David Girard-Allard of Ile de Montreal drained the very first shot of the tournament.
Cheers could be heard throughout the course as the first player of the tournament took an early two shot lead after sinking a hole-in-one on the tenth hole par-three.
Scott Bogle of Ontario, winner of four Ontario events this year, is among the favourites.

Club de Golf Beloeil has held many prestigious championships over the years, such as the 1989 and 2005 Canadian Senior Amateur, the 1995 Canadian Lady Amateur and the 1998 Québec Amateur. Beloeil’s course record was set by Olivier Edmond of Quebec when he shot an outrageous 26 on the back nine, holing out twice totaling a record 61 for his round.
Activities will begin Monday, September 22nd with registration and practice rounds. On Tuesday, September 23rd the three day 54-hole stroke play championship will begin with the field cut to 60 plus ties after the first 36 holes.
There will be 36-hole InterZone competition compiled of four players on each team representing the nine Canadian PGA zones. The team score is calculated from the best three out of four scores accumulated over the first two rounds. The purse for the InterZone competition is $5000.
The total purse for the championship is $60,000 with the champion receiving a $9,000 first place cheque.
