Steps can be taken in battle

As at-risk people line up to get their H1N1 flu vaccine, it’s worth repeating that those patiently waiting their turn can take steps to ward off the illness.

Although medical officials encourage all to get the shot, it may be some time until the average person can gain access to the vaccine.

Patience is a virtue and there is no reason for healthy people to panic as they wait their turn, but there are preventative steps that can and should be taken to ward off the virus.

The Public Health Agency of Canada encourages all residents to take the H1N1 flu seriously and offers these important tips to protect ourselves and our families:

• Wash your hands frequently;

• Keep your hands away from your face;

• Cough and sneeze into your arm, not your hand;

• Keep common surfaces clean and disinfected;

• Get immunized; and

• If you are sick, stay home until your symptoms are gone and you feel ready to take part in all your normal activities.

These are all common sense precautions, perhaps, but important in the battle against this illness.

It’s also important to stay informed about clinics so that one can get the vaccination when it’s available.

Stay tuned to local media sources such as this one and check out websites like www.interiorhealth.ca or www.immunizebc.ca.
