Schubert society deserves praise
Schubert Centre is celebrating its silver anniversary this year and the festivities include a dinner and dance Saturday night at the seniors facility in downtown Vernon.
It’s a notable occasion for the 1,300-member strong Schubert Centre Society that provides services including a coffee shop, entertainment, billiards, crafts, a thrift store and many more too numerous to mention.
“These, along with the excellent food services, keep the members and guests coming back for more,” Vernon-Monashee MLA Eric Foster said in the Legislature in paying tribute to the centre.
He also acknowledged, like in most societies, it’s the work of numerous volunteers that allows the Schubert to function so well on a daily basis.
The dream of the Schubert Centre took a leap of faith by the Knights of Columbus in 1964, who planned, designed and finally built the facility in 1984.
The society took over the ownership and management in 1991 after some difficult years that included a cycling fundraiser by a member that helped keep the Schubert Centre going to become the vital community asset it is today.
So congratulations to the present and past members of the board of directors, the staff, and of course the volunteers and members of Schubert that have helped the facility reach this milestone. There’s few in this community who haven’t enjoyed the ambience of Schubert Centre in some way, whether by attending a wedding, play or concert, or just soaked up the fellowship at one of its many events. Congratulations and thank you.
