Vernon-Monashee MLA Eric Foster is urging residents to pay their respects to our veterans.

Foster rose in the Legislature Thursday to acknowledge those who fought and continue to fight for Canadians’ freedom.

“This year Veterans Affairs Canada asks: how will you remember? I remember the photos of my father, who was in the Canadian Navy during the Second World War, and the photos of some of his friends who did not come home,” he said.

“Many Canadians are serving abroad, maintaining our proud tradition of peacekeeping. We have a duty to remember and a duty to teach our children about the brave men and women who have served and currently risk their lives so far from home.”

Foster added that Remembrance Day is a time to call the more than 1.6 million Canadians who served in the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War and to pray for those who are serving today.

“The poppy encourages us to speak to veterans and hear their stories,” he said.

“But above all, the poppy signifies that we are truly grateful for the sacrifices these brave men and women and their families have made so that we can live in a free and democratic country.”
