Cherryville residents are celebrating their deep, rich history.

A special gathering will be held Sunday to mark the 90th anniversary of the community being named Cherryville.

“In 1919, Mrs. Olava Hanson submitted three names to the postal service for consideration — Cherryville, Cherry Creek and Cherryvale,” said Ernie Laviolette, Cherryville Historical Society member.

“To her delight, Cherryville was selected. We’ve been know as that ever since.”

Hanson’s post office is still located next to the community hall although it is now a private residence.

The event Nov. 8 will take place at the community hall from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. and will include a tea and a chance for residents to visit.

“There will be balloons for the kids and cake,” said Laviolette.

“The historical society will have a display and show historical photos.”

Besides the historical society, the event is hosted by the Cherryville Community Club.

Laviolette hopes people from throughout the North Okanagan, but particularly Cherryville, will attend.

“We’re inviting everyone who is interested to come out, and especially any oldtimers,” he said.
