Halloween quiet for police
Halloween partiers minded their manners Saturday.
Vernon RCMP responded to 68 calls for service on the evening.
“There were no major incidents to report, which we are very happy about,” said Gord Molendyk, spokesman for the detachment.
“Everybody, with all of the parties and everything, was well behaved.”
Molendyk said 19 people were housed in RCMP cells for intoxication, including a majority arrested and put in the cells by 6 p.m.
Police officers arrested one impaired driver and issued five 24-hour suspensions.
Of concern leading up to Halloween night was an online advertised private party at a farm high in the hills above Westside Road, off Okanagan Indian Band land.
The event was selling tickets for the party and advised party-goers to bring their own alcohol.
But, following a visit from the RCMP, and a talk about Liquor Act regulations, organizers rescinded the BYOB note.
“There were no major incidents at the party,” said Molendyk.
“Our officers attended the all-night function about four times. One 16-year-old was arrested for intoxication and returned to our cells, but they had security at the gate checking people.”
Ed Walter, organizer of the event, which was called Old Souls Night – Dancing With Spirits, had nothing but praise for the way RCMP conducted themselves.
“It was a great evening and the RCMP were wonderful,” said Walter.
“It went smoothly, people were happy and I couldn’t have asked for a better event.”
Walter thanked the RCMP for dealing with the intoxicated teenager in a professional, positive manner.
“They took him away and I’m thrilled with that,” he said.
“The police were nothing but wonderful. They handled the situation and whole evening in a really good way. I couldn’t have asked for better.”
Walter, who hosts large private parties and raises monies for local charities, said he will review party policies for people of all ages.
“It’s part of my belief system, it’s not worth the difficulties in controlling teenage drinking,” he said.
“They don’t understand the deeper meaning of celebration and positivity we work with here.
“In no way whatsoever, under any circumstance, do we want underage people drinking.”
Saturday’s party raised $700 for the local food bank.
