The RCMP are seeking public assistance in relation to a two-vehicle accident south of Vernon.

Just before 10 a.m. Thursday, the driver of a northbound car crossed the centre line and struck a southbound tractor trailer unit between Birnie and Bailey roads.

“We’d like people who were there to come forward,” said Gord Molendyk, spokesman for the Vernon detachment.

“We are trying to determine what happened. Eyewitness accounts are great during an investigation.”

The driver of the car — a 58-year-old woman from Winfield — was initially taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital in serious condition. She was later transferred to Kelowna General Hospital.

The driver of the truck was unhurt.

As a result of the accident, Highway 97 was closed while crews cleaned up diesel fuel leaking from the truck. The road reopened just after 1 p.m. Thursday.
