Greater Vernon’s Wesbild Centre could play a key part in a national sports event.

The North Okanagan Regional District has agreed that the City of Kelowna can use the facility for speed skating if it wins the bid for the 2015 Canada Winter Games.

Kelowna officials have targeted Wesbild Centre because it has Olympic-sized ice.

The competition would require access to the facility for about one week during a three-week span from Feb. 12 to March 7, 2015.

Kelowna would have to pay for use of the facility and hosting speed skating is supposed to be revenue neutral for NORD. However, one politician wonders if that is enough.

“There is no loss of income but will we make anything off it? Are we just being really nice guys?” said director Mike Macnabb.

Outdoor Skating Gets Green Light

Lumby residents could soon be enjoying a new winter pastime.

The North Okanagan Regional District board has given approval in principle to an outdoor ice rink being established between the skateboard park and the volleyball court in the village.

“It’s a great move that really helps families and gets them healthier,” said director Patrick Nicol.

A building will also be constructed to house a zamboni for the rink.
