One year into fundraising efforts for the Building a Tower of Care campaign, the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation is almost a third of the way to its goal of $7 million.

VJH recently announced they’ve raised $2.3 million with another million committed from individuals, corporations and community groups

“I think given the economic times, we’re quite pleased,” said VJH Foundation development officer Andrea Egan. “Given we just launched one year ago, the community has been very supportive but we have a long way to go.”

The new tower will house emergency, ambulatory care, surgical care, maternity, pediatric, intensive care and cardiac care units. Money raised is to equip those units with the latest medical devices.

“The money is going to purchase state-of-the-art equipment, not bricks and mortar,” said Egan.

With some help from the Vernon Fire Department, campaign volunteers hung banners from the VantageOne Financial Services building on 32nd Street to let people in the community know about their progress.

Several initiatives are currently underway including the VantageOne Round Up and Donate promotion which allows credit union members to contribute funds by rounding up the cost of debit purchases to the next dollar. Members receive a charitable tax receipt for their efforts.

“When we look at the tower, it’s something that affects everyone from birth to death,” said Egan. “We’ve completed one year and are appealing to the community to keep supporting and helping us out.”
