Resource teaching kits that highlight the role B.C.’s forests and wood products play in tackling climate change have been distributed for use in elementary and secondary schools.

“The government of British Columbia is committed to doing our part in addressing climate change,” said Forests Minister Pat Bell.

“There is more we can do besides reducing emissions. These kits highlight the importance of using wood and wood products to combat climate change.”

Bell added that a wooden house stores about 29 tonnes of carbon.

““That’s the same amount of carbon produced by one car driven around for five-and-a-half years, and all the more reason to be building with wood whenever possible.”

The elementary resource kit is geared toward Grades 5, 6 and 7, and is titled Climate Change and Our Forests.

The secondary resource kit is geared toward Grades 10, 11 and 12 and is titled Climate Change, Our Forests, Our Future.

Both kits contain curriculum connections, lesson plans, suggested research topics and activities, DVDs and posters.

Topics include the carbon cycle, climate change, our forests, and the use of wood to help fight climate change.

The Council of Forest Industries created the content for the resource kits.

in accordance with identified Ministry of Education learning outcomes, while Forestry Innovation Investment Ltd. (FII) designed and distributed the kits.
