Lumby RCMP are investigating a strange incident that led to one of their members being assaulted.

The incident happened April 25, when police were responding to an urgent call in Cherryville.

On the way, they came across a single-vehicle motor vehicle accident on Highway 6 near McInnis Road. The vehicle had sheared off a power pole, and the occupants were trying to leave.

“Police stopped to investigate and were met with a wall of opposition from the registered owner and his two passengers,” explained Lumby RCMP Cpl. Henry Proce.

Police say one of the passengers, a 24-year-old Cherryville resident, struck a police officer in the face and was subsequently subdued. The male was arrested and sent to Vernon cells.

A female companion was also held overnight in cells.

No one admitted to driving the vehicle, and the incident remains under investigation.

“Alcohol was definitely a factor in the accident,” said Proce.
