A Vernon teenager facing charges in connection with the car accident that killed a Vernon cab driver earlier this month has had his court matter adjourned for four weeks.

The 18-year-old male was represented in Vernon Court Wednesday morning by an agent for his Kelowna lawyer, who requested a one-month adjournment.

Crown counsel agreed, saying there are many issues to discuss in the case.

The teen is facing five charges: impaired driving causing death; impaired driving causing bodily harm; being in care or control of a vehicle or vessel with a blood/alcohol reading of over .08; dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

Howard Collins, 48, a 10-year veteran driver of Vernon Taxi, was killed shortly after 3 a.m. on April 20 when an SUV allegedly ran a stop sign at the intersection of 43rd Avenue and 20th Street and broadsided his cab.

A passenger in the rear of the taxi was injured, taken to hospital and was subsequently released. The male suffered broken bones in his hand.

Dallas Parker Smithson is slated to appear in court again on May 28.
