Okanagan Indian Band members out hiking Saturday for deer antlers to use in artwork, instead found a human skull.

Vernon RCMP, with help from the South East District’s major crimes unit, are investigating the discovery of the skull in a wooded, bushy area near Antoine Road, off Head of the Lake Road, shortly before 5 p.m.

“It’s a remote area of a community pasture that is used by the band,” said Vernon RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk.

“Our officers went to the scene and secured it after a preliminary search.”

Twenty members of Vernon Search and Rescue were called to the scene Sunday to assist in a search around the area where the skull was found.

Molendyk said no other bones were discovered.

The skull will be examined this week by a pathologist and anthropologist, and dental records will be checked.

Molendyk said it’s too early in the investigation to determine the race and sex of the skull.

“Currently, we are checking all missing person files.”

Vernon Search and Rescue will be sending approximately 20 to 25 members back to the site on the weekend.

“We’ll meet Saturday morning and we’re going to do another sweep of the area above the hillside where the skull was found,” said Leigh Pearson, search manager.

“We’ll be looking for bone, clothing, whatever doesn’t look like it really belongs there.”
