A notorious intersection in Vernon could soon be brought under control.

City council instructed staff Monday to investigate the possibility of installing a four-way stop at 43rd Avenue and 20th Street.

“It’s a safety hazard,” said Coun. Jack Gilroy of the area which has been the site of several accidents over the years, including a fatal two-vehicle crash that claimed the life of 48-year-old taxi driver Howard Collins April 20.

The prospect of a four-way stop comes as good news to neighbours.

“It would be excellent especially because of the number of kids crossing there,” said resident Laura McNeill.

Besides high speed on 43rd Avenue, there is an issue of poor visibility at the intersection, and McNeill wonders why it has taken the city so long to take action there.

“We’ve called them numerous times when there’s a bad accident,” she said.

The push for staff to investigate upgrades came from Coun. Pat Cochrane.

“I don’t know if it would have made a difference with that (April 20) accident but a four-way stop will calm traffic,” he said.

“The sight lines are terrible and traffic is going too fast.”

The April 20 accident occurred when a Chevy Blazer, northbound on 20th Street, failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the passenger side of the taxi cab, which was eastbound on 43rd Avenue.

Concern about the intersection also came from Coun. Barry Beardsell.

“I’ve complained in the past about it. The difficulty is going north on 20th Street because of an incline and a hedge. You have to nudge out on to 43rd Avenue to see,” he said.

“But time and time again, staff has said the intersection is not dangerous and does not warrant special action.”
