If you go out in the woods today, you’re in for a big lesson, which will be more apparent when Alberta Opera presents a modern version of the fairy tale classic, Little Red Riding Hood.

The comedy-musical is the second of four shows in the Vernon Performing Arts Centre Society’s kids series, and takes the stage twice on Sunday, Nov. 15.

With four performers, an original musical score penned by Jeff Unger, and set and costumes by award-winning designers, Little Red Riding Hood offers a truly engaging theatre experience with a moral message.

The play follows the story of two students: Little Red Riding Hood and Wolfgang, who as it happens, is a wolf and a bit of a bully, said the show’s co-writer and director Farren Timoteo.

“She’s a really great student, almost shy and quiet, and it follows their journey together and how they try to solve their differences,” said Timoteo.

“I was also really excited to collaborate with Jeff Unger. I think he’s a brilliant composer, and to take my crack at collaborating with him and offering something to Alberta Opera that I haven’t had a chance to do yet.”

The play starts within the walls of a small woodlands elementary school, where the two students just can’t seem to get along.

The trouble between the exemplary Little Red Riding Hood and the delinquent Wolfgang worsens when they leave the school grounds and Little Red finds herself confronted by the bully along the path home.

Uncertain of how to deal with him, she threatens to get him in trouble by rushing home to tell Grandmother.

The exciting climax at Grandmother’s house reveals that maybe there’s more to this bully than Little Red might have thought.

See for yourself when Little Red Riding Hood stages at 2 and 4 p.m. at the Performing Arts Centre.
