Michael Moore is at it again.  And when it comes to being cranky, cheeky, one-sided, satirical and a slight (though critics of his work will say he ain’t all that subtle) fact twister, nobody does it better.

Moore’s latest picture, Capitalism: A Love Story, isn’t his best film, but it could very well be his most ambitious.

Here, instead of hammering away on one single issue, he takes on a number of topics: the low pay of airline pilots, how Reagan screwed up unions, privatization, how the rich just keep getting richer, recent financial woes, the foreclosure epidemic and that ridiculous $700 billion government bailout.

Cheery stuff, huh? At least in Moore’s puffy hands, he finds ways to have some fun. And if he doesn’t do it with his biting narration, he does it with stunts like backing an armoured truck up to various corporate headquarters, demanding reimbursement of taxpayer’s money. Not outrageous enough? How ‘bout wrapping crime scene tape around the New York Stock Exchange??

True, Moore is becoming less a documentary filmmaker and more a bold essayist. He doesn’t offer any solid solutions to the damage that capitalism has caused, but really, is he supposed to?

His views, though tongue-in-cheek and not always drenched in solid facts, make us think. And, love him or hate him, you’ve got to admit that Moore’s stuff is interesting to watch, especially when he’s miffed.

And there’s no doubt about it, when it comes to the topic of capitalism, the big guy ain’t a happy camper.

The feature is currently playing at Vernon’s Towne Cinema.
