The Vernon Public Art Gallery’s curator has won an award for an exhibition he organized earlier this year.
Lubos Culen was honored at a recent B.C. Museums Association awards banquet with a Museums in Motion Award of Merit in recognition of his outstanding commitment and collaboration on the creation of the first Okanagan Print Triennial (OPT), which took place at the Vernon gallery in March.
Culen collaborated with Liz Wylie, curator of the Kelowna Art Gallery, and Briar Craig, associate professor at the UBC Okanagan, on the project, which featured 20 artists from across the country showcasing the very best in Canadian printmaking.
“Being recognized for the development and realization of the first Okanagan Print Triennial exhibition in the Vernon Public Art Gallery in 2009 was unexpected,” said Culen. “The main concept of this exhibition was to establish a new tradition in the Okanagan that brings the work of the best printmakers from Canada and around the world to the Okanagan.”
“Lubos is doing great work at the gallery, and it is wonderful to see that recognized on a provincial level,” added the VPAG’s executive director Dauna Grant. “He is a very dedicated and creative person and he works hard at bringing exciting exhibitions and art education opportunities to the people of the North Okanagan.”
The next OPT will take place at the Kelowna Art Gallery before returning to Vernon as an international juried exhibition.
