Voleurz offers lessons in Outdoor Education

To many in Canada’s skate and snowboard industry, Vernon and Voleurz are nearly synonymous.

“Vernon more or less just took over everything,” joked Darren Rayner, producer for Voleurz, an action sports production company and clothing line.

What started out as a group of athletes meeting regularly on mountains eventually turned into a business that recently released a fall collection and is about to premiere its fourth film – Outdoor Education.

Because the movie stars nearly a dozen Vernon-based athletes and crew members, including Josh Bibby, TJ Schiller, Justin Dorey, Riley Leboe, and Cam, Joe and Jan Shuster, Rayner never worries about packing the house for a Vernon premiere.

“A lot of the people involved are from here. The community of Vernon is really stoked to see what other people from Vernon are doing in terms of action sports and we are more or less the direct link for showing what these talented people are up to.”

Outdoor Education, which follows Galactic Alliance, Yes No Maybe and More for the Astronaut, was shot at Whistler Blackcomb, Silver Star Mountain Resort and Monashee Powder, a remote, high elevation private ski destination 45 minutes from Vernon.

A combination of ski, snowboard and even GT Snowracer stunts shot on B.C. champagne powder, Outdoor Education features split screens of the landscapes, the athletes in action and their reaction afterward.

For that the film won the best editing award at the recent International Freeski Film Festival in Montréal.

Voleurz films, said Rayner, offer winter action sports film-lovers a different point of view in more ways than one.

“We are shooting dangerous things that people love to see, but we have a friendly, happy outlook on it and don’t take it too seriously. Sometimes people feel bombarded by the feeling (athletes) are out to prove they’re the best and that’s great...but it’s hard to stay focused when you’re not entertained by humour or a different editing style.”

Voleurz, which filmed Outdoor Education from November until July, will kick off its promotional tour with two premiere showings in Vernon. Rayner said their fans have come to expect a certain message from Voleurz movies:

“This is us. This is what we do. We enjoy ourselves on the mountain,” he said, adding they’re hoping to generate an even bigger audience this year by offering free downloads of Outdoor Education from their website starting Nov. 22.

“We just want as many people to see what we are up to, and that promotes our clothing,” said Rayner, who believes both aspects of the Voleurz business – the clothes and the movies – thrive on one another.

Voleurz is showing Thursday at 10 p.m. at MoeJoe’s and in an all-ages screening Saturday at Okanagan College at 8 p.m. with $10 admission.
