Boss rounds up bail
Judge Lucy Whitbread eyes prisoner Bryan Burns suspiciously after he was locked up Wednesday outside the IPE office for the Round’em Up, Bail’em Out fundraiser for the Kidney Foundation. Donators had contributed nearly $1,000 as of Wednesday afternoon.
Being locked up was the best thing Bryan Burns could do to help the Kidney Foundation.
The IPE manager found himself behind bars just outside his Armstrong office Wednesday and donations came in to help keep him there. It was Burns’ job to try to drum up funds to set him free.
It was part of the Kidney Foundation’s Round’em Up, Bail’em Out fundraiser held across B.C. IPE staff readily volunteered their boss when they were approached by Deb Gosnell, the foundation’s fundraising co-ordinator, about it.
Burns was charged and convicted of “Going hog wild,” which was the IPE’s theme this year.
To add insult to injury, he was made to wear a pair of pig ears while cooped up.
Gosnell says the event is key for helping pay for research and kidney disease education campaigns. Money is also used to offset costs to people who need to travel for kidney treatment.
“People don’t realize it, but the number of kidney patients is doubling every year,” said Gosnell.
“The more you talk, the more you realize how many people are affected by it.”
Contributors seemed keen to see Burns serve hard time as the dollars flowed in.
As of Wednesday afternoon, $935 had been raised. More donations can be made online at www.kidney.ca and clicking the You Can Help tab.
The pain and humiliation of jail didn’t seem to bother Burns too much.
“I love these things, it’s all good. Anything for a good cause.”
