It’s an exciting time to be a cross-country skier.

The Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre launched its 2009/10 season Thursday, its earliest opening in five years.

“It’s a pleasant start to the season,” said manager Scott Lemon.

The trails have been groomed and it’s all a result of a storm that brought snow earlier this week.

“With more than a foot of dry snow on the hill, the conditions are most favourable for skiing,” said Lemon. “We have trails open for all abilities and we have about 20 kilometres of track set.

“Being that it’s earlier than we expected we will have our early season rates for day passes.” Sovereign Lake is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
