Summerland tae kwon do students returned with medals from national competition in the Maritimes.
Tae kwon do instructor Carl Wuensche said 14-year-old competitor Carly Edge achieved a silver medal in the bantamweight division and 15-year-old Krystal Hirt received a silver medal in the finweight division at junior nationals in Halifax. Wuensche noted that one of Edge’s opponents was last year’s national and Pan-Am Games champion. Edge and Hirt have both competed in tae kwon do for close to six years, and qualified for Team B.C. with strong performances at provincial competition in early November.
“This was their first time competing at this level,” said Wuensche.
He added that both students brought home the medals after sparring competition that involved three two-minute rounds. Leading up to the nationals, Edge and Hirt trained in Kelowna with other Team B.C. members from the Interior.
“They do conditioning work, running doing laps and sparring as well,” said Wuensche. “At the team training, they did a lot of sparring.”
While he has also competed at nationals, the Halifax tournament was the first time Wuensche assumed a coaching role with Team B.C.
“I coached three other people as well – one from Prince Rupert, one from Kamloops and one from Penticton.”
The junior national tae kwon do competition took place over three days at the Cunard Centre event site.
Funding support for the Summerland athletes came from Kiwanis, the Kinsmen and Legion Branch 22.
