Two Summerland girls will spar against the best in Canada when they compete in the tae kwon do nationals in Halifax early next year.

On the weekend, Krystal Hirt, 15 and Carly Edge, 14, both qualified for Team B.C. at the Masters’ Cup and Junior Team Trials in North Vancouver.

Hirt won gold in the fin weight division while Edge took gold in the bantam weight division.

Carl Wuensche, a third-degree black belt with Tae Kwon Do Summerland, said the two are expected to perform well in Halifax.

“They have a good chance to make Team Canada and go to the Worlds,” he said.

Hirt and Edge have both been in tae kwon do for around six years.

They said the provincial competition was challenging, but they both felt good at the event.

“I was nervous, actually, but it wasn’t that hard,” Hirt said.

While the national level competition will be a new experience, the two have received medals for tae kwon do in the past.

The weekend is the first time they have sparred at the black belt B.C. qualifiers.

They are now looking forward to the January event.

“It’s going to be competitive,” Edge said.

One other Summerlander was also at the weekend event.

Mat Perdue, in the 19 to 29 age category, also received gold.

Wuensche said Perdue’s win is impressive since he was battling the flu at the time.
