Time approaches for sprint triathlon

Next month, after the Ironman triathlon has come to an end, athletes from around the province and beyond will take part in the 10th Annual Sprint Triathlon in Summerland.
The event will take place on Sunday, Sept. 6 and will feature two competitions. For participants from six to 15 years of ages, the Kids of Steel Triathlon races will begin at 8:30 a.m. Adult races, for participants 16 and older, will begin at 10:15 a.m.
Tom Brickenden, one of the organizers of the event, said the event draws people of all ages. One year, an 82-year-old participant took part.
He added that the event also draws a number of families with parents and children taking part in various categories.
“We’ve even had a few Ironman participants using our race as a cool down,” he added. This year, 350 participants are expected. Those who are interested should visit https://eventsonline.ca/events/summerlandtri/ to register. Entries will be accepted until midnight on Sept. 4.
Brickenden said the bulk of participants are from larger communities.
“There are some locals, but that’s definitely not the biggest group,” he said.
For adults, the event features a swim of 750 metres, a 20-kilometre bicycling portion and a five-kilometre running portion. Details of the race can be found at http://www.orcaswimclub.net.
The Kids of Steel portion is sponsored by the Summerland and District Credit Union while the adult competition is sponsored by Kettle Valley Winery in Naramata.
For motorists, Lakeshore Drive will be closed from Highway 97 to Crescent Beach from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., although local residents will have access to the road.
Those interested in volunteering to help at the triathlon are asked to call Brickenden at 250-494-1747.
