A recent visitor from Japan made an appearance at Summerland’s Taneda karate school.
Yasuhiro Chitose, head of the Chito-ryu karate style, visited a class in Summerland on July 23.
Chitose lives in Kumamoto, Japan. Instructor Chris Taneda said the visit is an honour for Summerland’s Chito-ryu school.
“His father was the original master of our style.”
During the visit, Chitose bestowed the seventh degree of Taneda’s black belt.
Jean Boothe said she chose to enrol her children Coulson and Claire in Taneda’s karate school because she was familiar with Taneda.
“He is a very humble man.”
Coulson Boothe is currently competing on the Canadian national team.
“Last year he went. That was his first nationals last year, he got a bronze medal in his weight division,” said Taneda. He added that Boothe did not make the individual entry this year, but was taken on by the national team for group competition.
“They know he’s a good fighter.”
Claire Boothe has attained her brown belt in the style.
Taneda Karate runs classes in Kelowna, Westbank, Penticton and Summerland. Classes at Glenfir School are on Wednesday nights, with children’s and adult’s classes starting again in September.
