Markets cherished

Dear Editor:
As members of the local area farmers’ market we see first hand the enthusiasm of people interested in buying fresh food from local small farms.
We see how people get to know their food providers, discover where the food is being grown and what style of farming methods are used to grow things.
We value our connection to the earth. In big cities, they take children to farms to see where their food comes from. We can see that here; it’s all around us. When farmland is developed into an apartment building, you can be almost certain that it can never be turned back to fertile land again.
We began as backyard gardeners. We were soon inspired by the awareness that small farms can feed a large population in a community and people like to know who is growing the food they eat.
During the three seasons that we have participated as vendors at the farmers’ market, we have witnessed how this awareness is growing, especially as the younger generation gain interest in small scale farming.
We cherish the values that come with our role and our way of life. These include promoting friendliness and cooperation, forming close-knit families and creating self esteem that comes from completing useful, satisfying work.
