Summerlanders are showing local Olympic spirit and healthy living initiatives for a chance to win a $100,000 prize for the community.
Some of the initiatives have already been entered on the GamesTown 2010 website, but more are welcome.
GamesTown 2010 is a provincial program under ActNow BC, to promote support for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Community events and amenities can be entered on the Summerland page of the site.
The public will then vote for the community of their choice.
Last week, municipal staff submitted the first entries to the site.
They are the Giant’s Head Run, local Olympic exposure, the waterfront walkway and live viewing of the 2010 Winter Olympics events.
Municipal administrator Don DeGagne urges Summerlanders and local organizations to submit articles and events to the site and then to vote for the community.
“We have an opportunity,” he said. “The more unique we are in terms of our site the better off we’ll be when the voting takes place.”
The voting period began on Nov. 1 and will continue until Jan. 4, 2010. A panel of B.C. celebrities, including former Olympians, will select the winners.
The gold, silver and bronze medal winners will win $100,000, $50,000 and $25,000 respectively to put towards upgrading a sports or healthy living facility.
The grand prize winners will also receive tickets to the games, which will take place in Vancouver and Whistler in February.
Entries are judged on the creativity and enthusiasm of the submissions for healthy living, environmental sustainability, community engagement at recreation facilities and in amateur sports, the Olympic spirit and local participation in the World Healthy Living Challenge.
