The recent Union of B.C. Municipalities convention was an opportunity for council to discuss transportation and land use issues with provincial government representatives, Mayor Janice Perrino said.
The convention, which took place Sept. 28 to Oct. 2 in Vancouver, is an annual opportunity for local government representatives to meet with provincial ministers and staff to discuss issues affecting their communities.
Perrino said she met transportation minister Shirley Bond to discuss local transportation issues, especially a regional transit which would serve the community.
“The transit issue was the most exciting,” Perrino said.
She added that she has asked for a review of the local transit issue to be reviewed with a report presented by April.
She added that the province has promised a transit service for the region.
Perrino also met with representatives of the Agricultural Land Commission to discuss development issues affecting Summerland.
She had earlier mentioned the possibility of developing a walkable core area in the community, even if it may involve removing some parcels from the land reserve.
In meeting with the land commission representatives, Perrino said she was told to consider putting land into the Agricultural Land Reserve or adding value to existing agricultural land in the community in order to get other parcels removed.
“There are other lands in the area we would like to put into the ALR if we could,” she said.
