Crews are working on the first phase of a project to split Summerland’s water system into domestic and irrigation lines.

Jim Holtjer, manager of engineering for the municipality, said the upgrade will make a difference for next year.

The work is being done by H & M Excavating Ltd. of Penticton. Small diameter water mains are being installed on Gould Avenue, Loomer Road, Barnes Street and Haddrell Avenue. The cost of the system separation is close to $1.73 million plus tax.

Western Industrial Contractors Ltd. of Penticton will make improvements to the distribution pump stations in the Prairie Creek area.

A pre-construction meeting was held last Thursday. The work on the pump stations will begin in September. The cost of the pump station work will be around $200,000.

“The pump house improvements are relatively minor considering what we’re pulling off here,” he said.

A cost-sharing agreement is in place between the municipality, federal government and provincial government for the work.

The water system separation project is expected to be completed by the end of October.
