Young children have had a place to go before they hit school age this past year due to the Strongstart BC Centre at Giant’s Head Elementary.
Early childhood educator Suzanne Chavarie said the centre runs a free program for families with children aged three to five years old.
Chavarie noted that even though the centre has only been open since November of 2008, there are now more than 160 children attending the program.
“We are celebrating our first successful year.”
Parent Corina McCollum said she placed her four-year-old son Connor in the Strongstart program right from the beginning, when he would attend with his grandmother.
She pointed out that the centre gives her children the chance to do activities in a structured way, while learning what kindergarten is going to be like and meeting other children.
“I wanted my son to have that social outing.”
McCollum added that summer will be an adjustment period for the children who attend the program, being used to seeing each other every week and looking forward to activities.
