o House hit, power lines downed during weekend storm

Strong winds on Sunday evening knocked down two large trees on Quinpool Road.

At 10:45 p.m., a tree at Aaron Dodsworth’s home blew down, landing on the roof above a bedroom.

In that bedroom, his one-year-old daughter, Paige, slept through the crash.

At first, he thought a branch had blown onto the house, but when he went outside to look, he noticed the fallen tree.

“It’s a good thing it landed on the corner of the house where it’s strong,” he says. “It could have been a lot worse.”

While he has noticed no significant damage to the house, one of the cars was in the path of the fallen tree.

The family stayed in the house that night, but he moved his daughter into another room.

Russell Hinter of Arbortech says the tree had some internal rot damage which weakened it. However, he says an inspection would not have revealed the severity of the rot.

He adds that trees with such damage usually can continue to stand until a storm topples them.

A block away, at the intersection of Quinpool Road and Washington Avenue, another tree blew down around the same time on Sunday evening.

Bob Hanson says he felt a crash, as if something had hit his house. When he looked outside, he noticed downed power lines and the fallen tree blocking Washington Avenue.

Marlene Vancha says the tree just missed a shed and a bedroom window at a neighbouring house.

On Monday morning, crews were out to clean up both downed trees.
