If you are somewhat of a history buff or you just like to read good stories, the Summerland Museum has just the ticket.
The 73rd edition of the Okanagan Historical Report is now available, at the Museum.
The report has its share of Summerland content as one article by David Gregory covers the history of Summerland’s Fall Fair and Sherril Foster tells the story of the Van Hise family who pioneered here in 1903.
This article ties in with the presence of the “pump” that stands out front of the museum as it was originally the Van Hise family who brought it to the Okanagan.
Over the past year or so, Foster has been in contact with a genealogist in Sleepy Hollow, Illinois who was helping Albert Van Hise find out more about his family.
“It has been one of those interesting stories that comes to light when information is shared; we never realize how much good stuff is packed into our little museum, thanks to the people of Summerland who donate photos , stories and documents,” comments Foster. Also a beautiful image of the Kettle Valley Steam Railway’s 3716 locomotive is featured on the cover.
The 73rd Okanagan Historical Report is available for $25 and the purchase not only supports the Society but automatically provides membership in the OHS.
The museum also has copies of older reports for sale for people who are collecting the whole set which started publishing in 1926.
Museum hours are Wednesday to Friday, 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information call 250-494-9395.
