Christmas performers wanted

Actors, singers and musicians are wanted for a special Christmas season celebration which will be staged by Summerland Singers and Players in late November and early December.

Bryan Laver, director of A Christmas Pudding, said the production which features storytelling and music, was chosen because it is a departure from some of the more traditional Christmas dramas.

“Christmas often seems to be all Scrooge, all the time,” he said. “There are thousands of wonderful literary pieces that don’t get the attention they deserve.”

The production will feature a readers’ theatre format, interspersed with music. Laver said this format will allow participants to get involved without the extra time required for memorization.

“There’s a wealth of talent in this part of the valley,” he added.

The production was written by David Birney and was originally put together as a benefit in Los Angeles in 1995. It requires a cast of three men and three women able to read challenging text, eight to 12 male and female singers and musicians who play guitar, violin and keyboard. Laver is also looking for someone who can adapt and arrange music.

Auditions for A Christmas Pudding will be held at the Summerland Arts Centre on Main Street on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. and on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 28 and 29, at 7 p.m.
