Members of the Summerland Kiwanis Club will celebrate a milestone later this month as they mark their 60th anniversary of service to the community.

John Tamblyn, outgoing president of the club, said the anniversary will also include a plaque which will be set up in honour of Jerry Hallquist, the last of the charter members of the Kiwanis Club. Hallquist, who was active in the club, died in spring.

Tamblyn said some of Hallquist’s accomplishments in Kiwanis included launching and organizing street carnivals.

The club has also been active with other community projects over the years. These included setting up bus stops for children, launching the Kiwanis housing society, organizing the Read To Me program and establishing Key clubs for high school students.

There are now 19 active members in Kiwanis.

The club now meets twice a month on Tuesdays at noon.

The 60th anniversary will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 29 beginning at noon at Kiwanis Lodge on Quinpool Road.
