Twenty cadets of 902 Summerland Squadron began their 2009-2010 training year starting Wednesday, Sept. 9.
The Air Cadet program’s aims are to develop in youth the attributes of leadership and good citizenship, physical fitness, and to stimulate an interest in the air element of the Canadian Forces.
This year the Air Cadet program is rolling out another new training program for its Level 2 Cadets.
This Cadet Program Update (CPU) includes all new classroom lessons with an emphasis on experiential hands-on training, field trips, and interactive teaching styles.
Some of the classes new Cadets will be receiving include: community service, leadership, personal fitness and healthy living, recreational sports, air rifle marksmanship, drill, survival, radio communication and aviation activities.
In addition to the providing the cadet training program, the 902 officers, staff and volunteers plan extracurricular activities and exercises for the cadets. Cadets will venture into the bush for a survival training weekend in October. Every cadet in the squadron has been slated for a glider ride in October.
The squadron also has plans to take their cadets flying in a single engine Cessna airplane this training year.
Girls and boys between the ages 12 to 18 can apply for membership in the world’s largest youth organization.
The 902 Summerland Air Cadet Squadron parades on Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m., at the Harold Simpson Youth Memorial Centre in Summerland.
