A Summerland artist has been selected to participate in an art course in Wells, B.C. later this month.

Mikaela Etter was chosen for the 2009 Toni Onley Artist Project, an instructional course for professional and emerging artists.

The workshop will take place July 18 to 21 and features artists John Hall and Harold Klunder as the instructors.

Etter said she had earlier studied under Hall and respects his expertise.

To qualify for the course, Etter had to submit samples of her work, an artist’s statement and a letter explaining why she wanted to attend.

“It will let me explore different techniques of painting,” she said.

“It will definitely advance my skills. You can only go so far by yourself in a studio.”

Etter, who is working as the artist in residence at the Summerland Community Arts Centre, creates work which is a blend of realism and abstract art.

Since she began her term at the arts centre this spring, she has created a number of new works and has also led arts workshops.

She said the experience as artist in residence has been a valuable one and she appreciates the assistance of the arts council.

She added that the training session will help her to progress further with her art.

“This is just the beginning of a good future,” she said.

“My art is really taking off.”
