It will be a time to celebrate the arts, as the Summerland Community Arts Centre prepares for two summer events.

Beginning on July 25 and continuing until Aug. 29, artists and enthusiasts will lace up their shoes as they prepare to see artwork in various Summerland businesses.

The annual Artwalk event will feature pieces from local artists on display at a number of local businesses around the downtown area.

Heather Elander, co-ordinator of the Summerland Community Arts Centre, said the show is expected to have roughly the same number of pieces of art and the same number of participating businesses as last year.

A total of 27 artists, six of them new, had their works displayed in 20 downtown businesses last year.

Elander said additional artists are wanted for this year’s Artwalk.

“We’re looking for new artists as well as established artists,” she said.

The deadline for submissions is July 10. A jury committee will evaluate the works.

Elander said large canvasses or large sculptures could be difficult to place in businesses.

Art shown at Artwalk is for sale.

This year, Elander said the committee will approach the local wineries to be included.

In addition to Artwalk, the community will also participate in B.C.’s Cultural Crawl on Saturday, Aug. 15.

Artist studios around the community will be open to the public for a day.

“We are putting together a directory of artists and their mediums,” Elander said.

She expects 35 to 40 artists will open their studios.

Last year, a community-wide studio tour featured 12 local studios. This year, the same event had grown to 25.

“We should be able to have a good roster,” Elander said.
