Pumpkins gain popularity
Melinda Polesello of Blossom Fruit Stand says pumpkins can be used for much more than just Halloween decorations.

The residents of Summerland go through thousands of pumpkins over Halloween, but tossing them in the trash is not the only possible end for the vegetables.
Public works foreman Dave Hill said people are welcome to bring their pumpkins to the landfill. Hill noted that some people use backyard composting to dispose of their pumpkins, and he has not seen more than 20 or 30 pumpkins dropped for disposal at the landfill site.
“We’ll smash them,” said Hill.
Nester’s Market store manager Leanne Sieben said she had not thought about what people could do with them afterwards, but noted the store has sold a lot of the orange vegetables since they were made available.
At Blossom Fruit Stand, Melinda Polesello knew what to do. The stand carries a book of pumpkin recipes half an inch thick, with directions for pies and dessert rolls among other dishes.
She added that more people are beginning to eat pumpkins as they would any other vegetable.
Polesello also noted that this year’s pumpkins have gone fast, and there are not many left around.
She pointed out that part of the reason for this are the sheer numbers of pumpkins that customers are packing home.
“People are walking out with seven or eight.”
