A high school student has raked in a prestigious national award for academic performance.
Jeremy Dick, who graduated this year from Summerland Secondary School, has been awarded the Governor General’s Academic Medal.
The award is given to a student graduating with the highest average from a high school.
The national award was created in 1873 to encourage academic excellence.
Dick said he currently is looking towards 12 more years of school to reach a career in medicine.
He noted that he liked the idea of medicine because of the opportunity to make a big difference in the world.
Dick’s grandfather was also a doctor, who spent time doing medical work in Africa.
With high marks in both sciences and the arts, Dick said that he would study with the same methods for all subjects.
The 18-year-old Summerland resident will be attending UBC in Vancouver this September.
Summerland Secondary School principal Dave Searcy said he was very happy to see Dick receive the national award.
He noted that Dick has typically performed in the top academic bracket in his time at the school.
