Celebrating graduation

It was a time to recall warm memories of high school and to look to the future as Summerland Secondary School’s 2009 graduating students received their diplomas on Friday.

A total of 143 graduating students took part in the ceremonies at the Summerland Arena.

“Your place here today represents a lot of hard work,” said school board trustee Connie Denesiuk. “This day signals the point where your paths will look quite different from those seated around you.”

Darrol Colgur, a science teacher who has retired from the school, said he was impressed with the students in this year’s graduating class.

“A lot of you are helping underprivileged people here and around the world,” he said.

He also talked to the students about the importance of kindness, friendship and understanding their value. Valedictorians Krista Fabbro and Ryan Pigot talked about the memories they had shared through middle school and high school.

“Grade 12 was when the fun of high school really began,” Pigot said.

At the same time, the students also realized they would need to make some important decisions they would need to make during their final year of school.

“We had a lot of growing up to do this year to prepare for the future,” Fabbro said. “Once we hit the real world, I think our idea of life will be ripped apart.”

“It seems like our free ride is pretty much over,” Pigot added.

In addition to the diplomas, some of the graduating students received bursaries and awards from the community and area. This year, the bursaries came to more than $65,000.
