Taylor Peters’ memory is a bit cloudy with his stats, but believes the last time he scored four points in two games was during his midget days.
Last weekend, Peters helped the Penticton Vees pound the Burnaby Express 8-0 then assisted on Ryan Viselli’s goal to open the scoring Saturday against Merritt during a 4-1 win at the South Okanagan Events Centre.
“I think offensively I was really happy with the way I played,” said Peters. “There were some mental lapses there. It’s just from inexperience from not playing that much in the last couple months. Usually I’m pretty solid defensively.”
Peters, who is on assignment from the Portland Winterhawks, didn’t take all the credit though as he praised Viselli and Joey Holka.
“They are two phenomenal players offensively and defensively,” he said. “I think we have had good chemistry over the last two games, especially with Joey getting those two goals in the first night and me and Ryan connecting on that first goal against Merritt. We’re going to have a good line if we stick together.”
Holka, who Peters assisted on both of his goals, liked what he saw from the six-foot-three, 200-pound Delta native.
“He’s a big, strong kid who knows how to put the puck in the net,” he said.
A few things Holka likes about Peters is his speed, grit and hockey IQ.
“You can tell he has played a higher level and thinks the game well,” said Holka, who has 10 goals and 18 points in 20 games.
The 17-year-old was eager to make a good first impression with the Vees faithful and collected his first point midway through the first on Friday. Peters said he considers himself a defensive player but also sees himself fitting the mold of a power forward.
Peters was disappointed with how things worked out in Portland this year but is excited about this new chance.
Before coming to Penticton, Peters talked to former Vee Ryan Johansen, who is with the Winterhawks, about the team.
“He had nothing but good things to say about the guys and the new facility,” said Peters. “His word has been true. The guys have been really supportive of me coming to their team.”
This weekend the Vees face Langley in a home-and-home series and Denver Manderson anticipates a good challenge. The Chiefs are 12-6-1-1 and 5-3-1-1 in its last 10 games and sit third in the Coastal Conference.
“Any time when you play one of the top teams in another division, naturally you get pretty competitive,” he said. “You want to see how you match up with other teams.”
The Vees will host Langley at 7:05 p.m. then travel to the Lower Mainland Saturday.
Vees forward Eric Filiou comes around behind the Merritt net as a Matt Mazzarolo tries unsuccessfully to crowd him into the boards during Penticton’s 4-1 win Saturday.
