Tying for fifth in a 16-team tournament pleased Pen High Lakers senior boys volleyball coach Robert Gunning.
The Lakers coach said it was a tough tournament that started with the Lakers defeating College Heights 2-1 in sets. They also defeated Mt. Sentinel and lost to MEI, the top ranked AA team. The Lakers then defeated host George Elliot in straight sets before bowing out to Fleetwood Park, the top ranked AAA team, 2-0.
"It was a quality tournament," said Gunning.
Leading the Lakers in kills was Ross Raison with 25, Carson Berry 24 and Nigel Rahkola with 23. Berry also led in stuff blocks with 14. J.J. d'Aoust had eight digs.
In Penticton Men's Rec hockey action, the Barley Mill Canucks defeated the Bison 4-1 on the strength of goals by Sandy Brown, Ryan Pinder, Jamin Feist and Pat Noakes. Kyle Fraser scored the lone Bisons goal. Peacock's Perch Wolverines and Barley and Grapes Knights settled for a 5-5 tie. Kevin Borba collected a hat trick for the Wolverines with Chris Becker and Jared Myers adding singles. Stu Trimble, Jeff Burgoyne, Jordan Hooper, Matt Van Horlik and Jason Rutkowski for the Knights. The Mule Broncos hammered the AmeriSpec Hitmen 8-1. Eric Cerutti led the Broncos with a hat trick, while Jared Holmes and Rod Kenney scored twice and Rob Burnett added a single. For the Hitmen, it was Marcus Lebler.
